Why We Chose the Jungle Over Concrete
A reflection from the Shivari team on nature, development, and what we're here to protect.
Three years ago, when we began building Shivari, we chose this location for one reason: it was completely untouched. Raw jungle. The kind of green that hums at night and breathes in the morning.
Look at it now.
Every month, new construction appears on Koh Phangan. The jungle is being cleared — and with it, something far deeper is disappearing.
You Don't Have to Destroy What's Beautiful to Create Something Beautiful
Koh Phangan is not just a tropical island. For thousands of people who travel here each year, it represents something rare: a place where nature still speaks louder than noise, where silence is real, and where connection — with the land, with the self, with others — still feels possible.
So why replace that with concrete?
Why clear living jungle only to add a few decorative plants back in? Why build artificial environments when true beauty already exists here, perfectly shaped by nature itself?
People come to Koh Phangan for exactly what is being lost.

How We Built Shivari
At Shivari, we made a deliberate choice from the beginning: nature stays untouched.
That's why our space is naturally cool without air conditioning. That's why you fall asleep to the sounds of the jungle — birds, wind, the movement of life around you. That's why we treat every creature on this land with care and respect, from the bees that made a home in our treehouse to the snakes we quietly leave in peace.
Over the years, we've been visited by pythons, a king cobra, a wild black cat, eagles, and owls.
This is not a story about luxury. It's a story about belonging to a place rather than owning it.

What Happens When the Balance Breaks
A place doesn't just change physically when the jungle is removed. Its entire essence shifts.
The silence changes. The air changes. The feeling of stepping outside in the morning changes.
And the people who come — they feel it, even if they can't name it.
There's something in what is raw, alive, and unpolished that no design can replicate. Real jungle cannot be replaced by landscaping. Real stillness cannot be manufactured. Real nature — the kind that has pythons and king cobras and wild cats moving through it — doesn't come back once it's gone.

There Is Still Hope
We've watched this land for three years. We've seen what's possible when you work with nature instead of against it.
And we genuinely believe it's not too late — not for Koh Phangan, and not for the way we choose to build, travel, and live.
But it requires a choice. Consistently, every time land is cleared, every time a project begins, every time someone asks: what are we actually creating here, and at what cost?
We'd Love to Hear from You
What do you think about the direction Koh Phangan is heading?
If you've visited Shivari — or if you care about conscious travel and sustainable development in Southeast Asia — we'd love to continue this conversation.
Leave a comment, reach out, or come visit us in the jungle. It's still here. And we intend to keep it that way.
With love and roots,Team Shivari 🌿
